David Powell
Managing Director
David Powell has cultivated a sterling reputation in his profession and in his community. He offers credibility, dependability, and a track record of success, from his days as a CFO of an investment banking firm to the past three decades of guiding individuals and businesses with strategies to protect and grow their financial assets.
David founded Powell Wealth in 1994 as a full-service wealth management firm built upon a solid foundation of experience and integrity. As the managing director of Powell Wealth, his primary focus is our clients’ financial well-being. By taking the time to listen, ask difficult questions, and understand each client’s goals, David offers strategies that capitalize on opportunities and address challenges unique to individuals with complex portfolios.
A background in investment banking and commercial lending gives David a unique perspective on wealth management. Prior to founding Powell Wealth, he served as chief financial officer of an investment banking firm in Washington, DC, specializing in closely held business acquisitions. He has twelve years of experience as a senior vice president in commercial lending in Washington, DC, and Houston. During his tenure in banking, David also structured and managed multiple million-dollar relationships in both the private and publicly traded marketplace.
David earned a B.S. degree in Accounting from the University of Delaware. He holds his Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) credential, as well as his Series 65, and Life and Health Insurance Licenses.
The same experience David draws upon to serve his clients is an integral part of his role as a community leader. Throughout the years, he has served on the Cannon School Board of Directors in Concord, where he was treasurer four of his six-year term. He served as president for four of his six years on the Peninsula Community Foundation in Cornelius, and six years on the Lake Norman YMCA Board of Directors. David has chaired the Novant Health Foundation Lake Norman Advisory Board in Huntersville and supports Sunninghill Jill Kids.
David and his wife, Liz, have two sons and have called Cornelius, NC, their home since 1993. David enjoys golf, spending time in the mountains, and making time to enjoy his family and friends.
